Roaring 20s look at National Constitution Center

At the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia you can get a close up look at fashion from the 1920s. This new exhibit explores prohibition and the radical changes made to our Constitution from banning all liquor to repealing the act which laid the foundation for women’s rights.

 It was a time for women to explore a new look from bobbing their hair to shortening their skirts. It was time to find freedom in fashion. It was fun and frivolous. It was rhinestones, sequins and lame. Hats, combs and feathers adorned the short haircuts and small items like face powder and lipstick were placed in small beaded purses. A girl had to be ready to run if the cops busted into a speakeasy so the less you carried the faster you could run.

The 1920’s made fashion less formal and more fun giving women more freedom not only in clothes but in their life. Today this feeling still prevails.

Wings for Sucess creates Miracles

Wings for Success, a Chester County nonprofit organization is having its third annual fundraising even ton Oct. 25, 2012. Wings for Success empower disadvantaged local women by preparing them for competitive employment with free work-appropriate attire, wardrobe guidance and interview workshops.


The fundraising event, “Merriment, Makeovers & Miracles,” will take place on from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chester Valley Golf Club in Malvern. It will feature actual Wings clients sharing their success stories, a silent auction, and the first “Wings Makeover Magazine” featuring tips from professionals, all accompanied by hors d'oeuvres and beverages. This year, Wings for Success will also present its first annual “Woman of Influence Award” to QVC’s popular program host Lisa Robertson -- honoring a woman who exemplifies Wings for Success’ core values of commitment, community and resourcefulness. Since joining the West Chester-based retailer in 1995, Lisa has become one of QVC’s most influential hosts and is the public face of QVC at major fashion and charity events around the world. Wings for Success’ Woman of Influence Award recognizes Lisa’s special contributions inspiring other women to become engaged in life, to serve as a catalyst for change, and to believe, “Yes, I can do it!” Donations from QVC, along with Robertson’s personal contributions, have helped to outfit Wings clients and raise needed funds.

Each year, Wings for Success prepares more than 600 disadvantaged women for competitive employment, primarily in the hospitality, administration, retail and healthcare fields. Keep Styling in Delco!

Style Wars in Glen Mills to help children with cancer

On Sunday, September 23rd at 5 p.m., the highly anticipated 4th Annual Joseph Anthony Style Wars fashion competition benefiting children’s cancer foundation, Adopt a Pig: Change Matters for Kids with Cancer, will take place at Joseph Anthony Retreat Spa and Salon in Glen Mills, Pa. The VIP cocktail reception will take start at 4 p.m.

One hundred percent of funds raised through sponsorships, ticket sales, and a live auction at Style Wars 2012 will directly benefit the Adopt a Pig program. The initiative began in April 2005 when a father and daughter painted their first piggy bank shortly after learning of her cancer diagnosis. This project was initially a distraction for their family but later transformed into a source of therapy. Now, thousands of piggy banks are painted by children in the region going through cancer treatments. The painted piggy banks are an important coping mechanism and lead the fundraising for the charity. Fall Fashion Forward at Springfield Mall

I had a chance to talk to Maureen Brady Weir, Senior Marketing Director at Springfield Mall to get a glimpse of where fashion is going this season. Read on for all the trends and where you can find them at the mall.

Fall will be an interesting season for fashion according to Weir.

This season you will see the 80s style with fashion forward hint of the 70s. Colors are bright neon, purples and blues. Jeans were never so popular, though denim never goes away, the colored jean is here. Express and New York and Company are showing off jeans in colors and in loud prints. You can even find them in animal prints.

The skinny jean is still in and it doesn’t matter what your shape and size, they are cut and made in materials that are suitable for everyone.

Puffed sleeves are accenting the peasant look and blouses this season. Blazers are longer this year and you can wear bright colors for fun or classic plaids, blacks and browns. With the return of the blazer, comes the return of brooches. Pencil skirts are coming back to it’s a throwback to the classic conservative look of the 80s. Pumps with be pointier and boots will worn with chunkier heels. You can find these looks at Express, Macys, the Loft and New York and Company

Chunky bracelets, woven wicker handbags and tribal back packs are all the rage. You can find them with an American Indian influence at Justice or Target. Neon sneakers are in; Journeys, Hot Topic, Wet Seal or Charlotte Russe have just the looks to bring back the 80’s punk style making it new.

Leggings are still big. Weir predicts you will see them continue to be a hot item in animal prints, bright colors and lots of patterns.

The Pink collection is still big at Victoria Secret along with NFL wear for women. Its football season and you still want to look like a girl. A new format is coming to Springfield Mall so keep your eyes open. Weir said it will be very exciting and is only now happening at their store in Hamilton, NJ.

The Bomber Jacket and leathers have made a comeback. At the mall, Macy’s would be the right place to find the right jacket.

Scarves continue to be a hot item. Worn with a sweater or jacket the scarf is still big. V- Neckline sweaters are coming back and are longer. The cardigan is still around.

For the younger set who want to look hip check out Crazy 8, the Children’s Place and Gymboree.
