What's your signature piece?

Start the New Year with a signature piece. Your signature piece! Yes we all like to look like we stepped off the runway, well maybe. You always have to tame those looks a bit. This 2012 think of celebrating you. Make your own statement about fashion just like Princess Catherine, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez or Lady Gaga to name a few.  Please don’t wear meat though you don’t want the animal activists to spray you with red paint.

When you think of Princess Catherine the image that comes to mind is elegance. When you think of Jennifer Lopez you think flowing curves. Jennifer Aniston is put together with a causal air that’s very metropolitan. When you think Lady Gaga, you think, let’s say outrageous but definitely a style that is individually hers breaking all the rules. So what makes your style you?

Do you love to wear pins? Bold, Art Deco, or Victorian,  that pin on your coat says something about who you are and what you love.

Are you a scarf person? No outfit is complete until you drape that silk, cashmere or cotton scarf around your neck whether you are wearing a dress or jeans.

Maybe it’s the belt accenting those curves. Big and bold or chain links wrapped around your waist or hips saying look I’m a girl. Look at me.

What about dangling earrings? Those long diamonds hanging frame your face or do you choose small diamonds that you always wear along with those dangling earrings?

Maybe it’s a fragrance that you will wear no matter what. You walk in a room, leave and people know you were there. They inhale deep trying to catch a whiff of you as you run off to your next affair.

Fashion is all about you so make it work in 2012.
Decide on your signature piece and let the world
know who you are.  Keep Styling in  Delco!  Happy New Year!!!

Shine this Holiday Season

Shine on this Holiday Season

It’s all about the sequins, the lace,  the feathers , the faux fur.
Tis the season to shine. Glitter is the rage be it on your nails, your ears, your shoes or your belt

. Wake up the night and shine this holiday season . If buying a new dress isn't in the budget you can glam it up with sequined feather earrings or great colored nail polish with a shimmer.  Top off those jeans or jeggings with a sparkly belt and add some great shoes and a faux fur vest. Accessories can always save the day and glam up that old dreary outfit.  You got it girl. The holidays are yours!

But what about those Christmas parties. Sometimes getting dressed feels fabulous. A little black lace dress with a vintage feel takes the day. You  never can go wrong with the black dress.
Sequined strapless dress by Sherri Hill  is a definite show stopper as is this peek-a-boo sequin dress. Add some great shoes and a clutch. You are ready to claim the night.  Keep Styling in

Those Ruby Red Lips

Red Lips are all the rage but are you a bit intimidated?
Red can be overpowering and not all of us can carry off those ruby red lips. When you go to the lipstick counter there are berry reds to wine reds to cinnamon reds. What's a girl to do?

For those with darker skin or olive skin, reds are yours wear a dark coral or a deep cherry color.   For those with a pink complexion, a plum color in the red family works.  For those with yellow tones a warmer brown base red will give you the look you want. Redheads go for reds with more brown or warmer tones.

Blonde's and those with lighter complexions should try this trick so they are not washed out by their ruby red lips
Use a clear lip balm and then layer a colored lipstick over it, possibly a dark coral lipstick with a red pencil liners. Matte lipstick isn't as bold and more forgiving if you have thinner lips.

So here are some pointers on how to make those lips look fabulous when wearing red lipstick!

Use an oil-free foundation or lip balm over the lips, line it with a red lip pencil, fill in slightly and then apply the lipstick with a brush. Blot your lips and apply a second coat.

When using matte lipstick use lip gloss over it so your lips won't dry out.

So what if you went out and bought a red color that is too bold or just not the color for you, keep it.
Experiment with other lip colors you have. Create your own style.

Biker Chic this Fall

It’s riding season, motorcycle riding, that is. So what do you wear? How can you look chic and still ride safely?

I went toHannum's Harley Davidson Hannum’s Harley Davidson to get the scoop on looking good for those who ride a Harley and those who ride bitch (that’s bike talk for riding on the back). Grace Carnevale can help you out. She’s got the gear to keep you styling.

At Hannum’s I found there are three important things to keep in mind when riding; a helmet for your head, boots to keep your balance and most important being visible to traffic. Your helmet should be DOT approved. That means approved by the Department of Transportation. It could be the saving grace you need if you ever take a spill on your bike. Helmets come in different colors and prices. Some have shades that you can pull down to keep the sun out of your eyes. Others cover your full face.

Boots, girls we all love boots. But riding boots are unique for they have a harder toe and should go over the ankle. It helps when you shift so the toe is protected and won’t feel the pain. The boot takes the brunt of the shift and keeps the ankle straight. For a passenger, a higher heel is good so you can reach the bars to rest your feet on.

Sunglasses are important too. They should wrap around your eyes so your eye is protected. At Hannum’s if you bring in your prescription they can order the glasses you want so you always have great vision.

It’s good to be visible especially at night. So Harley Davidson has put reflective material on some of the outer jackets they sell. You want to be shine in the dark basically. Bright colors are warranted to keep you safe. When riding, always think safety first. One jacket has Illumination of 360 degrees so you can be seen from nearly every angle. They have Hi-Vis jackets and vests in orange and yellow. I know what you are thinking ladies, but remember you can’t be styling if you aren’t alive.
There is also the Rider Comfort System. It’s a three part system consisting of a base layer for moisture management, a mid- layer for extra insulation and an outer layer for protection. And for those who want to be warm and toasty as they ride on 32 degree and below days you can even plug into your bike or a rechargeable battery bike to keep warm. Leather chaps will also keep you warm Hannum’s has a great selection. Yes warm and toasty is good on a cold day on a bike.

Leather gloves are a good investment. Padding is what makes the difference between regular leather gloves and riding gloves. It helps with the shifting and pulling the brake and the clutch. So now that we have the basics down

I know you are asking what about fashion? How do I look styling on the bike or off? After the run, I want to look good.

Pink and purple are big this fall according to Carnevale. The Black Label Dark Custom line is new featuring pre-washed black denim trimmed in purple. The Pink Label has a philosophy true to most bikers: On this road, no one rides alone. This collection is gear and apparel with a purpose. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this collection is donated to National Breast Cancer Organization. The collection stems from tee shirts to even a leather jacket. Adding pink brightens up that all black biker look and helps out others. At Hannum’s you can find clothing for the petite woman to the full figured woman. Leather jackets sold at the store are guaranteed for 5 years.

Men’s clothing line features the Wille G insignia, a skeleton for those who don’t know who Willie G is. Honestly I didn’t. Men can find leather coats, sweaters shirts, jeans, sweatshirts, enhanced visibility clothes, tee shirts and even golf shirts.

Even the pup is styling in his Harley Davidson gear.

Jewelry that speaks to the artist in you

Stephania Lopez of Upper Darby started her hand crafted jewelry business after being laid off from MedRisk where she worked as an insurance specialist for ten years. The striking artist studied fashion designing ten years ago but needed to work so she put her dream on hold.

After being laid off she started her own business Mary’s Nieta. Lopez creates wearable art. Her art deco jewelry pieces are one of kind. She uses antique buttons, glass beads and wire twisting and turning it creating such interesting rings she calls Scream, Garden Heart and Celebration.

I love making jewelry I consider each piece to be a work of art in its own right. The rings  are like little sculptures for your hand, “said Lopez

"Celebration"

Lopez doesn’t just make rings; she also creates gorgeous beaded necklaces, earrings and bracelets. You can find her jewelry on her website http://www.marysnieta.com/

The Lure of the Long Skirt

Longer skirts are back according to InStyle Magazine. And not those bohemian long flowered types. Long tailored skirts with a flow in silk, wool, flannel and cotton. Designers Carolina Herrera , Marni and Donna Karan give the look a new silhouette this year on the runway.

Tailored you can wear them with a small platform heels and tinted stockings instead of clunky boots and tights. keep the tonal range of colors similar so you don't look so tiny. Slits will make this look sensual and the fullness of this new look will make you feel sexy not stuffed like a cigar.

Hey darling pair that skirt with long gloves and a smokeless cigarette holder and you are looking oh so Greta Garbo. You'll never be alone .

Old is New

The knit flame stitch in every color is big this year. Some of you will remember this look from the seventies.  Old is new.

Cocoa Channel

Fur trimmed vests, remember Sonny and Cher.  Dolman -sleeve pullovers and cowl neck lines. Stripes are big too. Those neon colors in lime are back too. Bright color making a better place possibly.

Big cuffs and embellished necklines make a statement that you have arrived. Crushed faux fur coats and the little black sheath dress make you look perfect for that special night out. Old and new together. Work or  on a night on the town:  We will always be grateful to Cocoa Channel for the simplicity of the little black dress forevermore.

Time to revamp the wardrobe

Photos from Bing Images.

It’s September so that means time to revamp and look at what’s in our closet. Time to put the white away; shoes, pocketbooks and short-shorts.

Hot colors for this season; hot pink, reds, purples, fuchsia and classic calming beige and tans for the less flashy. Stripes are big whether in different colors or just layered in the material.

The animal print is still hot, worn as an accessory or a top or dress. Leopard prints are neutral so they go with almost anything. Skirts are longer going to knee or if short; ruffled.
Pants are wide, or straight leg Leggings are still hot. Wear a tunic or a sequin top. The basic shirt is still tailored and a classic every woman needs one or two in her wardrobe. Ruffle shirts are still big. Leather motorcycle jackets can still spice up that look giving you an edge. For the casual look wear a graphic tee. Pair it with a woven knit scarf or a faux fur scarf. Add a faux fur vest. Layers are still going strong. Layer your shirt with a faux fur vest giving you that Sonny and Cher look from the you that sixties.

Jackets are back and so are suits to give you a professional look but they are more stream-lined giving an edgy look to the banker’s suit.
Be well-heeled in shoes that are platform. Wedge shoes are not just for summer. Wedge shoes are versatile coming in lace up booties; and open toed. But being comfy is in too. Long live ballet flats. Of course boots, boots, and more boots. The motorcycle boot lives on. Keep Styling in Delco!

Cover up on City Streets

Photos Courtesy of Bing Images

I know you are beautiful and you have worked out all winter for that toned body but still walking down the street in your bikini just isn't the way to go.
Only five-year old youngster can get away with it.
I know you love those whistles and catcalls from weird men in big trucks but there are no excuses with all the awesome cover ups around to be strutting around town with your derriere hanging out. You wouldn't walk around naked would you?
Well if you are walking around town after being at the pool in your bathing suit, you might as well be naked. Please don't wrap a  beach towel around you. Why add pounds where you don't want them.
  You can still look hot!!!
If you are fifteen or  eighty  there are so  many cool looks  out  there to chose from and you'll still get those catcalls  and whistles.
Scarves or shawls wrapped around your waist covering the rear gives you a bit of mystique that all men love. Long bohemian dresses in bright prints or colors are great too matched with a great pair of sandals. Cute terry cloth rompers are easy to wear and pull up over that wet swimsuit. A cute little mini dress looks great and will take you anywhere you want to go. You will look oh so cool.

Hair tips for those hair raising days of summer

Bing Images

Summer weather can play
 havoc with your hairstyle
Here's some tips on how to survive it all.

Frizzy Hair
Humidity in this area can be so thick that the straightest hair can frizz up.Use a smoothing cream mixed with thick hair gel or glossing serum.

Flat Hair
You know what I mean... hat or helmet hair.  Spray on some root volumizer and  create a little  lift by blow drying upside down. Hair spray will maintain the shape.

Oily Hair
Shake powder into your palms and run your hands throgh your hair starting at the roots.  The powder will absorb the oils. Work some mousse into the roots creating volume. You don't have to wash your hair everyday especially if you blowdry it.  The oil in your hair is a natural conditioner.  That doesn't mean not washing it at all but every other day or two is fine.

On the Beach or by the pool.
Spritz your hair to protect it from the elements with sunscreen. Mix one teaspoon of sunscreen lotion with SPF of 25 or highter with 1/2 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spritz every hour.
Braid it or tie it into a bun to keep it from frizzing up.
Use a conditioner you can leave in. It will deep condition your hair while protecting it.
Wear a hat or a bandana to cover your hair especially if you've color it. It will protect the color and also keep your scalp from burning.

From Frumpy to Foxy in the Summertime

I found this book  Frumpy to Foxy in 15 minutes flat  at the dollar store.  The book written by Elycia Rubin and Rita Mauceri  gives tips from grooming to looking great even  when you are a traveling. There are basics like makeup and wardrobe essentials to how to look good when you are pregnant. I found this book at the Lawrence Park Shopping Center. What a great find.
The book was written in 2005 and though six years old...it gives classic advice that never gets old.
Rubin is one of the original founders of The Style Network, and worked as the former Fashion Director for E! Entertainment Television.
Rubin has been a voice of style in  magazines and newspapers including The Los Angeles Times, People Magazine and Women's Wear Daily.
Rita Mauerci is  a style expert and award-winning television executive with over fifteen years’ experience developing and producing a wide range of programming on fashion, design, travel, and entertainment. The two put out another books called Curves Rule and Fat is Fabulous empowering women to look good with their God given bodies.

Here are some tips from the book on summer fashion.
Must haves in your wardrobe: tank tops; sundresses, sandals; mid thingh or cotton shorts with a flat front with flare, white tops pop your color; crisp cotton chinos; white pants; flip flops; ankle-strap espadrilles and white sneakers; a straw tote or light colored bag is all you need.and with jewelery stick to bangles in silver and wood ordangling earrings and chucky rings will complete your look.

Summer tips to always look cool in the heat: Keep your hair off your face so you don't breakout. Tie it back with a scarf. Get a pedicure so those feet look good in those faboulous beaded sandals. Lighten up the lipstick
You definitely need a hat and sunglasses and some sunscreen.
It's a great book and easy read and for a dollar the best fashion buy you will ever get. Keep Styling in Delco

Hats Hats and More Hats.

At the Royal wedding hats were all the rage. So unique ( odd is a better word) by a princess was sold for $30,000.  I am not a hat person. I like the wind blowing in my hair .
But yes hats  are quite the rage this year. With the Kentucky Derby over and the biggest event on the Main Line the Devon Horse Show. Check out these hats that Pete Bannon one of the photographers at the Main Line Times photographed. It will make you smile.
Even though I am not a hat person, please make sure when you are in the sun for a long time wear a hat. Sun poison, sun stroke and skin cancer can take an enormous toll on the body and your fashion sense.

A Fairy Prom Mother makes wishes come true

Reflections Hair Salon and Alfred's of Philadelphia, a florist are making dreams come true this Friday for five lucky Interboro students. The salon and the florist are located in the Briarcliffe Shopping Center in Glenolden.

Christine Thomas, owner of the salon wanted to promote positive self image and good self esteem for teens. She has been at the salon for over 20 years. Thomas felt anything she could do to help young women feel good about themselves would be fantastic. She had the idea in February and contacted Interboro High School.  Interboro High  picked five girls who they felt deserved a chance to have a head to toe makeover.

"It's small.  This is the first time doing this. I want to make it bigger next year. .. get a dress shop involved and a limo service.  Students could write essays, there would be a contest." said Thomas.

The  makeover is free to the girls. The flowers, too.
If they had to pay for this the cost to each girl would be over $200. Add the flowers you are up to $250.
The young women will get a spray tan, makeup, an up-do and jewelry for their hair.
The boys picked out the flowers. The girls and boys met with the florist making sure the flowers would match the dress they will wear.

"My daughter Cartier is ten. When I told her I would like to make this happen every year, she said you can call yourself the Fairy Prom Mother, " said Thomas.
Reflections Hair Salon is located1052 Ashland Avenue in Glenolden. You can contact the salon by calling 610-389-3203

Swimsuit Tip of the Day

                                Bing Images.
Tip of the Day
Keeping track of all your progress may be all you need to rev up your routine. When pedometer wearing walkers were asked to record their daily steps, they took more strides than those who didn't write down their counts.
Logging the numbers create a mental challenge to beat the previous day. Whether your walking or lifting weights, keep a record to see better results.

Styling at the Prom

Check out all these great looks worn by Archbishop Prendergast High School students. It’s senior prom time. Guys and gals posed at Merry Place at Glendale Park in Havertown before the prom which was held at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill

From Zebra strips to paisley prints to solid colors, you set your own style this year.

Anything goes. Bright colors are the rage. The brighter, the better!

Hairstyles were au-natural, long curls are in. Prendie girls were stunning and sophisticated.

The guys looked as good as the gals in tuxedos and suit coats and matching bright ties in the colors accenting the girl’s dresses.  Keep Styling in Delco!!!
